Common Symptoms of a Broken Heating Unit

Having a heating system that is properly maintained and working in top condition can keep your home warm and reduce your home utility bill costs. If you feel like your system may not be working properly, we recommend keeping an eye out for common symptoms of a broken heater.

Here are some common symptoms that may indicate that your heating unit needs service:

  • Won’t turn on
  • Blowing cold air/no warm air
  • Weird noises
  • Fan is not blowing
  • Circuit breaker keeps tripping
  • Faulty pilot light
  • Leaking or dripping
  • Faulty wiring
  • Burned out capacitor

Sounds You May Hear Coming from Your Furnace

Furnaces can be noisy sometimes, so much so you may be concerned that your furnace has a problem. Here we break down some of the different sounds a furnace may make and which require attention from a Las Vegas furnace repair professional.

What furnace sounds could mean:

  • Popping: Your ductwork is probably expanding or contracting. as it warms up and cools down.
  • Grinding: This happens when the motor bearing has an issue. Call a professional to address this problem.
  • Banging: You may have a dirty burner that is not igniting correctly. Inspecting and cleaning these is part of fall maintenance.
  • Rattling: You may have loose panels that need to be tightened or replaced.
  • Squeals: Usually a belt problem. You may need to replace the belt connecting the motor to the fan.

If your furnace stops working, or is not working in optimal condition, we can help you to bring it back into excellent shape. Whether your unit needs simple maintenance or a full replacement, we have seen virtually everything when it comes to furnace problems and we have the expertise to restore heat to your home.

Heating Tune-Ups Protect Your Investment

If you want your heating system to last for its full lifespan, consistent maintenance is vital. Heating tune-ups not only improve efficiency and keep your system running longer, they also prevent costly and unexpected breakdowns. A tune up is especially important right before the cold season when your unit will be subjected to sudden strain after being unused for a long period of time. Secondly, some warranties require regular maintenance in order for the warranty to remain valid. It is a good idea to know whether this is the case so you do not ending up voiding the warranty unintentionally.

Why Won’t My Heater Turn On?

While Las Vegas is known for our hot, sunshine days, desert nights here can get quite cold. When the temps drop, the last thing you want is for your heater to not work. If it won’t turn on, there are two common reasons why.

Why Your Heater’s Working:

  • Thermostat: The thermostat communicates the outside weather to the heating unit, telling it when to turn on. If it’s broken, the heater won’t know when to turn on.
  • Circuit Breaker: The circuit breaker protects homes from electrical overload. If you use too many electrical outlets at once, it might trip the circuit breaker. This might cause your heater to turn off.

Why It's Important to Have Your Furnace Inspected & Cleaned

Due to the fact that furnaces emit carbon monoxide, it is critical have a furnace inspected for leaks so that this poisonous gas doesn’t creep into the air you’re breathing.

Call a professional heating technician if you notice any of the following:

  • You are getting frequent headaches. This could be due to a carbon monoxide leak and should be addressed as quickly as possible. Your furnace is supposed to seal the carbon monoxide within the heat exchanger and pump it out the flue vent, but if the exchanger gets cracked it can get into the air.
  • You have birds nesting in your flue vent. If they have made their home or even died in the vent, it can result in excess carbon monoxide being trapped due to the restricted air flow.
  • You have a dirty air filter. It is important to replace your air filter often so that it does not get caked in dirt and clog the condenser coil. This will minimize the ability for air to flow freely, which can raise the temperature in your house when the heat is turned on. You should replace your filter every 1-3 months.

  • I would highly recommend these folks

“Sierra Air and Jason Thack (30 years’ experience) are the BEST in Las Vegas area. First of all, my AC stopped working at about 4p on a Friday and to make matters worse, I live in a manufactured home and there are essentially, only 2 companies licensed to work on manufactured homes. I was very pleasantly surprised when the dispatcher, Michelle called and set up the service call last night and I asked about the service contract they offered on their website if I would be able to apply the reduced discounts and benefits to being a member for this repair job and the answer YES. I was told to expect a call from dispatcher about 30-45 min before they would arrive (between 8a-10a) and at 715a, they called to say he was on the way. He arrived at 8a and within 10 minutes, had diagnosed the broken fan motor....by 9a, had cool air blowing through the vents and he went ahead and did the 'spring' maintenance on the unit. Overall, a very pleasant experience and I was expecting a big $$ amt, being the weekend and July in Las Vegas and, all total work done including parts and warranties came to $1000....that included changing 3 capacitors to eliminate a near-future service call or two. I am grateful, cooled off in my house, and would highly recommend these folks (who discuss actual fees and costs PRIOR to any work being done).”

  • I plan to renew when the current contract is up.

“Matt arrived on time as promised. Office called 30 minutes ahead to let me know that he was on his way. Very polite and efficient. Matt did the spring-summer system inspection. New system was installed last year - September so we are still on our maintenance contract for another year. I plan to renew when the current contract is up.”

  • Occasionally I run into a company that values its reputation and understands what "customer service" actually means. Sierra is that rare breed.

“Occasionally I run into a company that values its reputation and understands what "customer service" actually means. Sierra is that rare breed. I'm trying to think of something that didn't go as promised but I can't. They responded to my emergency immediately, diagnosed the problem, explained what had to be done, then did it. Jeremy, who installed my new water heater, explained everything in terms I could understand, was thorough, courteous, laid plastic on the marble floors to make sure there weren't any scratches, and was an absolute gentleman. The price was fair and I couldn't be more satisfied with the entire process. These people obviously have pride in what they do. I would recommend them without hesitation.”
